On October 6, Zapier announced that Zapier Agents is now part of "AI by Zapier." The agent's prompt, tools, trigger and permission to act now live in "a single AI step in the Zap editor." That means an agent can use the rest of the platform: triggers, filters, paths and run history.
According to Zapier's announcement:
- Approvals per tool. You can "require approval before running, set per tool." The old Agents product treated approval as all-or-nothing.
- A runaway brake. If a single run "crosses 75 tasks," it "pauses for a human instead of looping quietly." Zapier says this limit will become adjustable.
- Billing. "AI steps bill as tasks": 1, 3 or 5 tasks per step, depending on the model tier you choose.
- Model choice. You can pick Standard, Advanced or Premium tiers, or name a specific model.
- Existing agents. Eligible agents show a banner with a step-by-step guide, so you don't have to rebuild them. Zapier notes some capabilities are still rolling out.
What it means for an SMB
- This is the hybrid pattern, now built in. The Zap handles the fixed steps, and the AI step handles the judgment call. Our workflow-or-agent guide explains when that mix fits.
- Set approvals by risk, not all at once. Let the AI step read and draft freely. Require sign-off on anything that sends, spends or changes a record.
- Watch your task count. Premium-model steps cost five times as many tasks as the cheapest tier. Check Zap History after the first week.
- If you already use Zapier Agents, look for the migration banner and test each converted agent before relying on it.
